The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II - an unforgettable experience for visitors to the UK in 2012

The Diamond Jubilee takes place in 2012 and marks 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen came to the throne on 6th February 1952 although her Coronation did not take place until 2nd June 1953.

To mark this unique occasion, a full programme of activities has been planned throughout the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.

There are several major events taking place in the early part of summer 2012.
 
The first is the Diamond Jubilee Pageant. In the presence of the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, this event takes place on the 10-13 May 2012 in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. Over the three nights over 800 international performers and 500 horses will provide dancing, music, military and equestrian displays to pay tribute to a very special anniversary.

The weekend commencing 2 June 2012 has been designated the Central Weekend of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The government has designated the 4 & 5 June as Bank Holidays enabling the extension of the celebratory activities across the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth.

The outline programme ‘kicks off’ on Saturday 2 June 2012 when the Queen will attend the Epsom Derby.

On Sunday 3 Jun 2012, people across the nation will be encouraged to take part in the Big Jubilee Lunch to take the form of a traditional street party or picnic lunch for large and small groups. In the afternoon, The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant will take place on the Thames in London. Billed as the largest and grandest river pageant since the reign of Charles II, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, with other members of the royal family, will travel in a special Royal Barge leading a flotilla of at least 1,000 boats.

On Monday 4 June 2012, the BBC is organising a Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace. The music programme will feature major artists from Britain and the Commonwealth and will be televised to the nation. In the evening the Queen will light the National Beacon, one of 2012 that will be lit throughout the UK and the Commonwealth.
 
The programme concludes, on Tuesday 5 June 2012, with a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral and a formal carriage Procession across London by The Queen and members of the Royal Family.
